Transform Your Lip Shades: Berry Colours For Autumn/Fall

Written by Kim Knight

Autumn/fall has arrived, it’s a fantastic season for makeup, it allows makeup geeks to become expressive, sexy and bold. Long gone are the nudes, pinks and shimmer of the summer’s warmer months, where less is a little more and it’s all about the “the glow.” As we step into a new season, it’s time to whip out the bold hues of winter, berry being one of them. And of course prepare for glamorous makeup for the holiday season in a few months.

To many makeup artists/ enthusiasts it’s the biggest myth in makeup “I can’t wear that shade.” There’s a big possibility you can, if you find the right tone of a particular shade. See the article Understanding The Colour Wheel: How To Find The Best Makeup Shades For Your Skin’s Tone. For a deeper understand of how you can rock any shade you want, with the right undertone for your skin if these tones are too bold for you. Look at the shade you like, with a different undertone.

Here are some classic lipsticks for the fall. You’ll find high, medium and budget brands. Remember autumn/fall is all about a more matte finish, generally. That said if you’re a cream, or sheer shade kind of woman there’s something for you too. You’ll find some recommended lines to check out their berry shades.

Matte Finish:

MAC Cosmetics (high-end)

Shade: Sin.

Price: £16.50 / $29.00

A stunning brick red shade, it’s a deep wine  like in colour. The actual picture on the MAC website does not do this shade justice. I only found out about it, last year when I watched a YouTuber rave about it! On her shade skin, it looked beautiful. This shade is one for all tones in my personal view. A very complimentary shade, and popular with stars such as Rhianna. This is a classic lipstick with a high matte finish and potent colour. The longevity of this lipstick is also excellent. You don’t really need a lipstick locker it will last, with a slight touch up. This shade is not for the shy, it’s bold and makes a statement. Team this shade up with a classic cat eye liquid liner, or a subtle inner eye area highlight for a pop, with   plenty of long lashes. Keep the skin matte less is more with this shade, it does all the talking.

Kat Von D Cosmetics (mid-range)

Shade: Exorcism

Price: $20.00 £17.00

This range of cosmetics is by far one of the best value for money. From a very talented lady. Kat Von D is not only a talented tattoo artist, makeup artist, and musician she has created a range of makeup that really is a big deal! The whole range is fantastic. I will do an article  on some other products from the range, stay tuned. With  Kat Von D’s range there’s variety, she has clearly thought about her own ethnic Latin American roots, and developed a range that is suitable for the deepest of tones when it comes to skin, as well as the fair hair and skinned ladies. Exorcism is a shade I bought in the summer, ready for the fall. When I bought it I also bought Lolita a beautiful mauve toned nude pink. I wore this brand almost every day of the summer. I’m pleased to report this range has a longevity in wear that’s better than the high-end MAC Cosmetics range, in my personal experience, it does not seep into the lips and it’s cheaper.  Team this deep burgundy/purple up with a full matte face to complement the matte finish of this shade.  Kat Von D’s range is a little hard to get hold of in the UK, as far as I know only Debenhams retail the range. And it’s available in Sephora in the USA.  If you’re in Europe or farther afield both of these retailers ship overseas.

MUA Paintbox Lip Pallete (budget)

Shade:  Imperial Plum Hues

Price: £4.00!!  roughly $5.20!!

Stunning, a mixture of matte and cream shades this pallete really is value for money at the budget end with five shades. I also bought this in the summer along with the Honey Hues nude palette from MUA, and rocked both palletes all summer! Even the plum shades as I could not resist they are very pretty. They are very long-lasting shades, considering it’s a drug store brand. Complimentary to a number of skin shades as there are pink, mauve and red understoned shades. Available in the UK at all large Superdrug stores. Or on online here. Directly from MUA. My advice is use a lip pencil to stop bleeding.

Other Affordable Brands To Check Out: All Can Be Sourced Online To See The Range.

  • Revlon = cream finish shade lipsticks (mid range price).
  • Sleek Makeup = cream and matte finish shades. (budget price).

Colour Pop Cosmetics = Liquid Matte shades. I recommend Limbo Tulle, LAX and  Avenue great lip shades for fall/autumn, especially for women of colour or an ethnic warm toned skin background. However, you can only ship them to the UK from California. (Unless things have changed, last year I bought the whole range in one go! To save the hassle again). Do check their website for details. (mid-range price).
