Vitamin D, The Sunshine Miracle

Waking up tired in the morning  can be the sign of a vitamin D deficiency.

Fatigue, forgetfulness, bone pain, muscle pain, scattered thoughts, mood swings, among other health issues   can all be the cause of low vitamin D levels in the blood system. Some people experience subtle symptoms, others so severe, they end up on a wheelchair.

The source

It’s a simple enough vitamin , present in fish, milk, egg yolk, dairy products, grains, liver fish oils, beef liver, and direct skin exposure to the sun.

What exactly is vitamin D

Vitamin D is actually a hormone, most of what we need is produced within our bodies, taken from the direct contact  with sunlight or vitamin D rich foods. It is carried into the bloodstream to the liver, where it is converted into the prohormone calcifediol. Calcifediol then circulates to the kidneys, where vitamin D is converted into its active form, the calcitriol,.

it’s an important component of our lives, also known as the sunshine vitamin, needed in our day-to-day routine for a healthy functioning system.

What we don’t take from the sun, we consume through drinks and various foods.

Vitamin D for bone and skin

Vitamin D is good for the bones and skin, keeping the bones strong and healthy while destroying free radicals and preventing the skin from aging prematurely – although keep in mind too much sunlight can cause skin cancer and other types of skin problems.

Together with calcium supplements, it can act as an appetite suppressant, helping an individual to lose weight.

Treatment and prevention; Severe symptoms and deficiency effects:

Vitamin D has been used to help the treatment and prevention of many known diseases like hypertension, glucose intolerance, multiple sclerosis, against anxiety and depression,  and type one and type two diabetes.

Other severe effects that deficiency of vitamin D can cause are:

  • Cognitive impairment for adults,
  • chronic fatigue diseases,
  • depression,
  • cardiovascular diseases,
  • asthma,
  • cancer

What vitamin D DOES?

Vitamin D’s major function is to help the body absorb and metabolize calcium and phosphorus, hence the reason for bone pain and skeletal deformities when vitamin D is low.

Causes and Solutions

Among the main causes for the vitamin D deficiency can be

  • a strict vegan diet (remember that vitamin D is found in fish, fish oil, milk, eggs, beef liver);
  • The lack of exposure to sunlight;
  • If a person has dark skin (melanin prevents the skin from producing vitamin D);
  • The digestive track can’t absorb the vitamin from the foods consumed due to some medical condition;
  • The individual has kidney problem.

A simple blood test can determine whether the person has a low level of vitamin D,. A result of 30ng/ml – 50ng/ml is normal; anything less than 12ng/ml means the person has a deficiency.

An average adult needs between 2000IU – 4000IU of vitamin D daily. It is recommended the person sees a doctor before starting any diet or taking any supplements.
