Valentine’s Day Makeup Inspiration: Shade & Light Palette by Kat Von D

Written by Kim Knight

Hey Beautiful!

So V-day is approaching and it’s time to start thinking about your makeup looks, for date night. Shimmer, glitter and the like might be the norm for creating romantic looking makeup, however, the Shade & Light Palette by Kat Von D is a perfect eye palette to reach for. Not just for Valentine’s but as a staple palette for everyday looks. It’s an old skool palette, many may have heard of it, and yes Kat Von D has released other Shade & Light palettes, the original one is an oldie but a goldie.

First, it’s important to note that this is a matte palette, you will not find any shimmer or glitter here. Second, the palette is perfect for all skin tones. From blonde and blue eyes to deep mahogany and brown eyes this is the bestselling feature of this palette. What makes it so wonderful for all women? Let’s get into it!

Tones:

As you can see this palette has three different families. From left to right we have the neutral family tones, cool family tones in the middle, and on the far right the warm family tones. There is a quad of tones for every skin undertone (not colour) don’t get confused with the two. undertone is warm, cool or neutral colour is fair, med, deep. See the article here to understand the colour wheel and for more details on the two.  Whatever your skin’s undertone there is a go to selection of colours. In my experience, the tones work across the spectrum well. I myself am a ‘natural warm’ undertone with med-deep colour, and use the far right quad. However I  do use the others also, depending on the look I’m creating.

Blend-ability:

It goes without saying Kat Von D has done an excellent job at creating shadows that blend well, easily and make life very simple in the morning, or when there is little time. These shadows have a nice consistency to them, they can be moved around the delicate eye area with ease.

Longevity:

With, or without an eyeshadow primer these shadows stay put! All day and all night! Every makeup geek knows it’s a sin to apply makeup without some form of primer, however if you are a woman or man (no judging here) who  prefers to leave out this step you won’t be let down with the Shade & Light palette’s longevity. In fact, all the products I personally have tried by Kat Von D have excellent stay-put power, from lipsticks, eyeliners, foundations. She’s created a formula that works well in all environments.

Diversity:

There are so many looks you can create with this palette. From a really dark, sexy, rock-chick strong smoked-out eye, to an everyday soft gentle smoky eye. The beauty is like I said, how well you can blend and build with this palette.

Top  row, far right is an ideal base shade for med, olive and deep skins, in the same quad bottom left is a really warm burnt brown shade, that really helps to contour and define the crease area.  You can create more drama to this area with some of the black shade. In the middle quad, in the middle the black is the blackest of black! But you can control well how much drama you want. I normally use it even for daytime looks just to darken the crease area and outer V of my eye slightly, for some drama. Come night time it’s full on to create a very sexy look with false lashes.

Hooded / Small Eyes/ Contouring:

Kat Von D herself has really small eyes herself, not hooded just small. I watched an interview with her when she created this palette. She used her talent as a tattoo artist and knowledge of using shade to allow areas of her art work to stand out, and add ‘dimension.’   She applied this to makeup artistry. With this knowledge she has created a palette that is great for smaller eyes, and hooded eye shapes, to help add the dimension that is often lost with these eyes shapes.

The light colours = the centre area of the eyes to brighten and create an illusion of bigger eyes. The shade= to add the all-important crease and dimension to small or hooded eyes. She also included a detailed leaflet on how to apply her talent as an artist, to the application of makeup in with the palette. This is a great resource she has included, to help makeup geeks learn how to add dimension to their eyes with clever artistry. I myself have tried it, and swear by her technique whatever palette I’m using.

Lastly, the fact that there are twelve matte shades is perfect for  all eye shapes but especially smaller or hooded eyes. Shimmer shades will just close the eyes off, if your eyes are hooded your makeup will most likely transfer to areas on your lid you don’t want it.

I highly recommend this palette and encourage all women, but especially women of colour to check it out. The tones and shades are very complementary to med, olive and  deep skin colours regardless of undertones. Perfect to get your Valentine’s Day eye makeup ‘flirt’ going. Have fun creating smoky drama or soft subtle feminine looks. Don’t forget your false lashes for extra bang.

Price: £37.00 from Debenhams in the UK  48.00$ from Sephora international. More on the high-end price but a great investment.
